Literally, hands down the best game I've ever been a part of.
Good game coach.
RECAP:
Stanford began the game with the ball after WVU won the toss.. Andrew Luck led an impressive, methodical drive that lasted all but 15 seconds of the first quarter before a 15 yard run made it 7-0 Stanford.
West Virginia answered with a great kickoff and spent no time getting into the redzone, but were immediately stopped and halted to a field goal. Stanford was held to a three and out, and West Virginia took over for a 2-minute drill to end the half. A crazy play capped the drive as the two teams swapped fumbles in the same play - only to have WVU pick it up and run it in for a 10-7 lead at the half.
West Virginia had a long methodical drive of their own to open the second half, and punched it in for a 16-7 lead... BUT, on the extra point, Stanford blocked the PAT and cribbed it to turn what would have been a 10 point deficit into just a 7 point deficit, plus ball.
As the drive approached midfield, WVU picked off an Andrew Luck pass, only to have it stripped away, and Stanford pounced on it. The ensuing drive lasted into the 4th quarter, but Stanford punched it in to tie the game at 16 apiece. ON THE ENSUING drive; first play, Stanford strips Steve Alston, and returns the fumble for a touchdown to go up 23-16
West Virginia wasted no time and Geno Smith the first of what would be 4 touchdowns - all to breakout receiver Ivan McCartney ....to tie the game at 23 with 3:19 remaining
A quick stop got West Virginia the ball back, and they drove into enemy territory with ease. Stanford pulls out a stop on a key 3rd and 4 run play and forces WVU to kick the go-ahead field goal with 33 seconds still remaining.
Equipped with NO timouts, Andrew Luck led his boys into field goal range. With a tough angle, Stanford narrowly makes the iced kick... to create a 26-26 tie at the end of regulation.
Somehow, that turned out to not even be the half of it...
Throught each of the first 2 overtimes, the two teams traded touchdown scoring drives.. but in the 3rd overtime, with ball first, an errant throw followed by a drop forced WVU to settle for a field goal. The unstoppable Stanford running back was magically stopped for the first time all game.. and West Virginia's defence kept them in the game - holding Stanford to a fg of their own. (Though said RB still finished with 31 carries and 201 yards with 5 touchdowns)
In the 4th overtime, Stanford scored and coverted the 2-pointer... and West Virginia Followed suit with a 3rd touchdown from Geno-Ivan.
In the 5th overtime, West Virginia started with ball, and on 2nd and 10, the best throw of Geno Smiths life was lobbed into the arms of Ivan McCartney for the 4th connection between the two. They went on to convert the 2pt conversion. Stanford answered right back.. and scored with relative ease, running it down the throats of the tired WVU defense... but on the two point conversion, coach pulled out a play that he hadn't pulled out all game; a slow developing eventual pitch to the HB following a fake to the FB. The play took too long to develop, however, and WVU's impact saftey made the game-winning tackle to prevent the score...
Epic may still not do the game justice... sucked to see a loser come out of it..
..but... it wasn't me.. so BOOM
Good game coach.
