WOW... Thurman it's a shame you had to lose. That was a frickin valiant effort. I was up 23-10 going into the 4th and was pretty confident I had it locked up. He was one catch away from winning 24-23.
Our first attempt got disconnected with me on his five yard line right before half 14-14. We decided to start fresh, and I was up 14-10 at the end of the first quarter when it froze on a shot of Hairy Dawg celebrating. We simulated the first quarter so it was 14-10 and played from there.
I played it pretty safe on offense (nothing new there) and got a couple mistakes out of Thurman, as I needed to. I ran a lot, mixing in Williams occasionally as more of a power back. Toss plays worked pretty well for the most part, as he was determined to stuff the middle.
My linebackers couldn't cover Moreno, so I wasn't able to play much man. He threw a lot of plays over the deep middle, which were tough to stop and I was dissapointed I didn't get a user pick.
Overall, he probably passed 80% of the time, and I ran about 70% of the time. I was so consumed with nerves for the majority of this game that I honestly can't remember many of the big plays from it. I do remember Thurman trying to force a screen pass and my lineman intercepting it. That was a big momentum-shifter.
Fourth quarter, needing a first down to be able to run out the clock with just over a minute remaining, I came up just short on 3rd down, bringing up a 4th and Inches. A first down would win the game, while going for it and not getting it would give him great field position around midfield. I decided to go for it, and decided not to go with the QB sneak. Granted, the sneak is legal and 95% effective, but I just would've felt too sleazy using it to win the championship. So I tried a toss out of goalline formation, and he sent a corner blitz that blew it up, giving him the ball with a timeout and about 45 yards away from the win. He got it down around the 30 and was faced with a 4th down and six second left. He threw over the deep middle in a relatively crowded area, and although I was controlling a linebacker in that area, I was completely paralyzed from the nerves and of no use. It was incomplete, securing the title for me.
I hope Thurman isn't in suicide mode. That was a dream season for him. He was one play away from being the first elementary school kid to win it all. Great game, Thurm. You will have another great season for XXXV. I look forward to the rematch.
