Who is the best? Not your favorite, but who do you think is the greatest of all time?

is this a trick question? and TOOL? LMAO are you kidding me they wouldn't even belong on a part 3 of this list! there a good rock band but one of the best HELL no! its simple your either a Beatles fan or a Elvis fan! its the Beatles HANDS DOWN! rather you like them or not!

Tool is great...record sales don't indicate who is the best..if that were the case this would not be opinion because the beattles would be correct answer.

Elvis isn't a band, he is a singer...like Johnny Cash or Frank Sinatra.

tool has inspired almost everyone in the rock/metal scene today. it's near impossible to look at any of the current bands out there and find anyone who collectively measures up to the talent in that band.
and no i'm not a tool fan, just appreciative of the contributions that they've made to the genre of music that i listen too

don't say rock b/c they have contributed nothing to rock...just Metal. Rock music is bands like The White Stripes & The Strokes and Tool contributed nothing to them. Tool is an Alternative band.

so you don't consider bands like taproot, deftones, system of a down, chevelle, 10 years, etc as rock bands?? come and find one person who listens to metal that would put any of those bands into that category
tool has set the bar for both rock/metal.

Led Zep for me guys.

No, I don't. I'm sorry. Those bands right there are in the middle of Heavy Metal and Alternative. They are too heavy for rock...maybe we can call them Heavy Rock instead of Heavy Metal. Rock bands are similar to Classic Rock bands and none of those are.

If your going to throw Tool in there I have about 20 other bands to consider. What about the Pixies, hell what about Nirvana or 4 other bands from the early 90's. They changed Rock, turned it upside down and Nirvana took their ideas from a nerd band from Boston, the pixies, one of my all time favorite bands.
Tool didn't create metal and rock, Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath did. Every band today either follows the led formula or the black sabbath formula. and Tool fits the Sabbath mold.

Kent! About time you bought something to the table! Great post. Pearl Jam, Nirvana, Soundgarden, Alice & Chains, Stone Temple Pilots...all those bands would go before Tool any day of the week. Those are just bands from the 90's grunge period.

probably one of the most famous Sabbath songs... 1970 no one was playing this style back then, these guys were all from the steele town of Birmingham england, now Ozzy just sets around with his kids in that rich house with the MTV crew in his face. LOL.

i never said that tool created metal/rock. just that they have in my opinion had the most influence, yes even more than sabbath and zepplin, in that genre(s).
maynard is one of the weirdest people i've ever seen, but the man is a genius

I'm not saying Tool is bad, they just can't hold a candle to the list above as far as having an impact on music.
I forgot to add U2, whether you like them or not, they are a top 10 band of all time. Dave Matthews too, that guy is a legend. You can't hate DMB. Coldplay will be up there one day. You know you all like at least 1 coldplay song, they are so damn catchy.

Black sabbath, here is a great song, one of my favorites by them. Children of the grave, several bands have covered this song. I am thinking of the cheese band White zombie for one
Fast forward to the 2:10 section of the song, tell me if you don't hear bands today doing this shit.

i can honestly say that there isn't a dmb song that i've heard and like out there. i haven't heard a lot of his stuff because i havent liked the songs that have gotten radio play, but it's just not my cup of tea at all
i used to listen to coldplay all the time, a rush of blood to the head was an awesome cd, not a big fan of x and y though

This thread is awesome, we are all passionate about music and I can tell we are all knowledgeable about it. We all have our opinions.
The greatest thing about music is there isnt a win loss factor. We should do a greatest bands per decade instead of all time.
All time might be the rolling stones, has anyone played as long as they have?
